eikones, the National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) Iconic Criticism based at the University of Basel, is engaged in scientific investigation of images and unites more than thirty young scholars in mutual endeavour. As of 1 January 2009, twelve scholarships will be granted to doctoral candidates who are interested in composing their scientific dissertations within the scope of the Graduate School Image and Time.
The scholarships will be granted – upon successful intermediate evaluation – for up to three years.
The objectives of the Graduate School Image and Time are,
- to examine the various layers and structures in which time is constitutive for an image
- to analyse the temporality of the image itself
- to question the extent to which time itself bears iconic quality

The announcement is directed towards
- doctoral candidates from the disciplines of philosophy, sociology, art history, studies of literature, culture, film and media, of Egyptology, Islamic Studies (or other cultures of writing), of history, science studies, theology as well as related subjects, psychology, natural and technical sciences
- researchers in the areas of visual arts and theory of design
- applicants inland and abroad, including from outside of Europe
