University of Zurich

The origins of the University of Zurich date back as far as 1525. It was chartered in 1833, becoming the first European university founded by a democratic state without ecclesiastical or royal patronage. It is Switzerland's largest university, and its seven faculties encompass over 140 academic departments and institutes, offering a choice of more than 100 different degree-granting programs as well as interdisciplinary centres, laboratories and study programs whose work cuts across traditional departmental boundaries.

The University is home to 25'000 students, 1'400 mid-level faculty and nearly 500 professors, almost half of whom are from other nations than Switzerland. In order to attract the best and brightest minds worldwide, the University strives to provide an ideal setting for research and education.

The University of Zurich has a long tradition of excellence and innovation: it was the first university in Europe to accept female students; it has always employed the most renowned teaching staff (Albert Einstein was a professor at the University!); it fosters the highest quality of research – the work of Nobel laureates such as Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen and Rolf M. Zinkernagel testifies to this.

The University is counted among the world's top institutions for its cutting-edge research in various global and European rankings. It is also proud to be a member of the League of European Research Universities (LERU), the top tier of European research institutions. The University actively promotes and supports collaboration in research and teaching with national and international partners.

Numerous University and privately funded fellowships and research grants, as well as generous funding by the Swiss National research Foundation, provide junior academic staff with interesting opportunities and help attract and support the brightest scholars and researchers from all over the world. Promising junior researchers are supported both abroad and at home.

The University of Zurich is a research-based institution and provides a stimulating and inspiring environment for the advancement of innovative, high-quality teaching with service departments such as the multi-media and E-learning Centre. It has repeatedly been awarded prizes for its e-learning environment. It also offers PhD programs to the very best students at its different graduate schools.
