Zinkernagel testifies to this.

The University is counted among the world's top institutions for its cutting-edge research in various global and European rankings. It is also proud to be a member of the League of European Research Universities (LERU), the top tier of European research institutions. The University actively promotes and supports collaboration in research and teaching with national and international partners.

Università della Svizzera italiana, USI

The Università della Svizzera italiana (USI), also known as the University of Lugano, is an Italian- and English-speaking university. USI comprises four Faculties: Architecture on the Mendrisio campus; Communication Sciences, Economics, and Informatics on the Lugano campus. USI is active in many innovative fields of research and participates in numerous national and international research networks. Fostering exchange and contact with the professions and its alumni, USI also provides its graduates with career guidance, ensuring a smooth transition to the workplace.

With more than half of its students and professors coming from abroad and most Master's programs taught in English, USI has grown into a multilingual academic institution with great international breadth. USI's small size, its high teacher-to-students ratio, the integration of different disciplines, and top-quality technical and IT infrastructure make up the ideal conditions for study and research in a cosmopolitan and multicultural environment.

Ten years of age last anniversary, and the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) is sprucing up for a new challenge, a crucial phase for its future. USI has no long and solid tradition to rely on. However, this is hardly a drawback: on the contrary, a young USI is receptive to all sorts of opportunities to explore and pioneer. It is willing to take on enriching new initiatives; free to put forward strategies to meet the challenges confronting modern people: the environment, the economy, society, and the new technologies.

USI stands out in the Swiss academic landscape for its original teaching programs, both at Bachelor's and Master's level. These are informed by regional and historical-cultural motives, but equally by an inspired readiness to act on the reforms currently implemented in higher education. Look at the Academy of Architecture and the Faculty of Economics: their creation was fully justified, the former by a glowing centuries-old tradition, and the latter by the strength of Lugano's financial centre, with its resonance nationwide and worldwide. Then look at the Faculty of Communication Sciences, unique of its kind in Switzerland, and the Faculty of Informatics, well on its way to becoming the third centre of excellence in Switzerland after the two Federal Institutes of Technology. Both Faculties are eminently equipped to answer the call for experts and professionals to be trained in fields whose impact on social change, and consequently on change in our lifestyle, is likely to increase.

Combined with its privileged geographic position - USI acting as a bridge between the South (Lombardy) and the North (the rest of Switzerland across the Alps) - these choices give our university an identity of its own. USI is characterized by steadily rising student numbers, growing success in research and the international mix of its actors (the highest proportion in Switzerland), whether students, research and doctoral assistants, or professors.

University of Lausanne

The University of Lausanne (UNIL) was founded in 1537 as an academy and became a comprehensive university in the 19th century. In 2003, the UNIL decided to transfer the basic sciences to the neighbouring Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne, with which the UNIL maintains a very close cooperation. This strong move made additionnal resources available to reinforce the life and human sciences departments, giving the UNIL the clear identity it can rely upon now.

The UNIL comprises nowadays seven faculties where approximately 11,000 students and 2,600 researchers work and study.

Location
Lausanne is situated in the heart of the French-speaking region of Switzerland, on the shores of Lake Geneva. The UNIL main campus is located in an exceptionally green and spacious lakeside setting on the western part of the city. An excellent public transport network (subway, bus) allows to reach downtown Lausanne in just a few minutes.

Faculties
The UNIL is composed of seven faculties:

  • Theology and Religious Studies
  • Law and Criminal Justice
  • Arts
  • Social and Political Sciences
  • Business and Economics
  • Geosciences and Environment
  • Biology and Medicine

Research and teaching
The UNIL is active in research and teaching: all professors are researchers and students benefit immediately from the latest developments in their field. The quality of the research is reflected by the UNIL's desirable position in various citation indexes and rankings. The UNIL is especially strong in Finance, Forensic Science, Social Sciences, Environmental Sciences (Geochemistry, Industrial Ecology), and life sciences (Immunology, Neurosciences, Genomics, Evolutionary Biology).

The UNIL offers Bachelor, Master, postgraduate, PhD and continuing education programmes. The programmes are attractive: more than 50% of the Master's students in Business and Economics hold a degree from another university.

Quality
Quality is a priority of the institution. The UNIL has developped an original quality evaluation process initially focused on teaching, then extended to research and recently to the administrative management. The Center of Accreditation and Quality Assurance of the Swiss Universities has praised this quality evaluation process.

Teaching language
Courses are taught in French, and several Master's programmes in Business, Economics, and Biology are taught entirely in English, as is also the case for some executive programmes.

An international environment
The UNIL attracts researchers and students from the five continents: more that 30% of the teaching staff and 20% of the students come from abroad. The UNIL actively encourages exchanges by establishing cooperation agreements with partner universities all over the world.

Sustainable development
For more than 20 years the UNIL has been taking concrete and effective measures to reduce its impact on environment. Original solutions have been implemented, such as, among many others, the use of the water of the nearby lake to cool down the buildings in summer. To reinforce this policy and make it more visible, the UNIL is currently setting up an "Agenda 21" for the management and maintenance of the campus.

IMD

IMD is one of the world抯 leading business schools with over 50 years?experience in developing the leadership capabilities of international business executives at every stage of their careers. The majority of our program participants come from medium to large corporations and all have an international orientation to their businesses. Many companies, who begin by sending their managers to IMD programs, go on to develop their relationship with the institute to a closer level and become part of the IMD Learning Network, which provides still further learning advantages.
IMD was established in January 1990, as the successor to two previously independent business schools; IMI, founded in Geneva by Alcan in 1946, and IMEDE, founded in Lausanne in 1957 by Nestl? Incorporated under the name "International Institute for Management Development," IMD, as the institution is known around the world, is a leading provider of Executive Education for large and medium size international businesses, and for individuals. IMD today delivers the best in "real world" learning to build global organizations and individual careers.
Many of the 57 full-time Faculty members, made up of 19 different nationalities, are recognized world authorities in their fields. They divide their time between teaching, carrying out research and acting as consultants to major companies in many industries. This ensures that they remain firmly on top of the latest developments in managerial practice. Faculty draws on this experience to create a particularly effective learning environment that is highly conducive to tackling critical issues facing businesses today.
IMD is truly international. Every year, some 5,500 executives, representing over 70 nationalities, attend more than 20 open-enrollment Executive Development Programs (including an intensive MBA program) as well as company-specific Partnership Programs. They come from virtually every sector of service and manufacturing industries and range from young managers with a few years?experience to board members from major world-class corporations. English is the working language at IMD, though no single business approach or cultural background dominates. We currently have more than 50,000 Alumni based in over 140 countries and more than 40 Alumni clubs worldwide.
The IMD campus is located in the heart of Europe, on the shores of one of Switzerland抯 most beautiful lakes, in one of the world抯 most international regions. It is situated about 40 minutes by road or rail from Geneva, its intercontinental airport, and the home of many international organizations and global corporations.
MD抯 purpose-built campus provides the best possible learning facilities, including auditoriums, study group rooms and meeting rooms equipped with advanced audio-visual and computer equipment. It also includes a restaurant, coffee bar, shops and sports facilities. IMD is a non-residential campus, with participants staying in one of several first-class hotels located within easy walking distance.
